Testing in the Cloud from All Four Corners of the World

Workshop Overview

This is a hands-on workshop combining Python, REST API testing, and cloud infrastructure. Participants write a Python test agent, create 10,000 random test data objects offline, spin up AWS cloud instances using Python, and deploy test agents across global cloud instances to generate simultaneous traffic against a centralized REST API.

First delivered at EuroSTAR 2021 and StarWEST (rated 10/10), this workshop demystifies distributed systems testing by letting you build one yourself.

What You'll Learn

• Test REST APIs using Python: Requests, sessions, and authentication.
• Craft Custom Test Data at Scale: Generating realistic datasets programmatically that respect business rules.
• Infrastructure as Code (Sort of): Deploying cloud machine instances to execute test code via Python scripts (boto3).
• Distributed Execution: Managing state and reporting across multiple nodes.

Prerequisites

This is an advanced workshop. Participants should be comfortable with:

• Python scripting (or experience with another automation language)
• Terminal / Command Line interface usage
• SSH connections

Technical Requirements:

• Personal laptop (Windows/Mac/Linux) with Administrator rights
• Stable internet connection
• Ability to connect via SSH (Port 22) and access Port 6901
